When developing a WPF MVVM application with the MS Prism library (.NET 3.5) I needed a way to have different modules perform different threading tasks at a specified interval.

To give a small example: I have two views, one operates on the left side of the screen, on operates on the right side of the screen. They are not related, but they do get information from the same source (pushed to them) and operate at a constant interval of 25 FPS to perform some tasks.

So I created a small framework. It consists of a Loop class and a Manager class. The Manager contains at the moment two Loop instances in my application. One is used to retrieve data from a USB device at 10 FPS, the other one is used in my application and runs at 25 FPS. Different modules can subscribe to either one of these loops. They provide a sub-category and a callback function. Each Loop class holds 1 single thread which executes a queue of callback functions.

It looks something like this:

Manager.MainLoop.Register(LoopCategory.State1, OnDoSomething);
Manager.MainLoop.Register(LoopCategory.State2, OnDoSomethingElse);
Manager.USBLoop.Register(LoopCategory.Device, OnRetrieveInformation);

You get the idea.

The thread loop looks something like this:

if (_isRunning) {
  foreach (var item in _items) {
    item.Execute();
    if (item.State == _cleanupState) {
      toRemove.Add(item);
    }
  }

  foreach (var item in toRemove) {
    _items.Remove(item);
  }
}

The register function returns an identifier. If a user decides he can Unregister(ulong id) the callback function.

My application has a few different states. Certain views are used in state 1, but not in state 2. When they are no longer needed their loops are also no longer needed and can thus be removed. When the application switches states, MainLoop.Clean(LoopCategory.State1) is called, followed by MainLoop.Start(LoopCategory.State2). All registered callbacks from state 1 are removed and all callbacks from state 2 are marked as executable.

On a thread loop iteration I loop through all the callbacks, and if they are supposed to be removed I add them to a list. When all callbacks from the current state are executed I check the list which holds the callbacks to be removed and I remove them from the callback queue list.

Unfortunately this sometimes leads to a CollectionModifiedException. It doesn't always happen, once every three months or so somebody receives this exception, so it's very hard to debug and to fix.

Therefore I am actually looking for another solution to achieve the same goal. Either an approach that comes from the Prism framework, or an category aware thread library that can do something similar like I described above. Can anyone give me any pointers towards a possible solution? I'd pretty much like to use a third party solution rather than having to maintain yet another helper library.

Your issue sounds more like a thread concurrency problem than a design problem. Have you wrapped access to non-thread-safe data (including most collections) in a critical section? –  Bahri Gungor Sep 8 '11 at 20:35

Yes, the required parts are locked using a Monitor. I would also be a lot happier if it would occur more often, but in the period of one and a half year and +5k users I've received less than 10 reports about the issue and in all my debugging I have not yet been able to reproduce it. –  Jensen Somers Sep 9 '11 at 5:38

The problem described in your question has nothing to do with MVVM or PRISM, but only with threading. Since you reject the threading suggestions we've made, I suggest you close this question and ask one directed specifically toward finding the type of framework you are seeking (regardless of threading), within an appropriate question context area. –  Bahri Gungor Oct 3 '11 at 20:54
