I need a sequence of a Numbers to be generated through incrementing. For Ex if it starts with 001 goes till 999 next no should be A01 again goes till A99 next should be B01. Can anybody help me to write a logic for this. Should be implemented using Java code.

I am upvoting Joachim's comment; questions without sample code or initial attempt of the user, leaves SO members to code from scratch.. it then turns out to be more like freelancers coding for the person asking the question, maybe for reputation or fun or shear desire to help. This doesn't check the case where the number is less than 9, in which case it would need to display a zero as well as the number. –  Kaushik Shankar Sep 9 '11 at 8:07

One way to do this would be to make the first character, and the second 2 characters separately.

This should do what you are asking for, and I think you can understand what is going on in the nextElement method.

This takes care of the cases where the numbers are below 10, and the first 0 is not shown. This also takes care of the case where the third digit is originally from 0 to 9, but goes from A - Z afterward. This does not take care of the case when the number gets larger than Z99. –  Kaushik Shankar Sep 9 '11 at 8:37

Allocate a batch of 100 numbers in one go and use them and allocate a new batch if the existing batch is exhausted. so something like String getBatchPrefix() which generates 0, "A", "B"... then create an object

corresponding to each prefix have a batch.. this keeps the responsibility separated.. having the logic of going from 0 to 99 stays at one place.. and prefixing with 0, "A", "B" or maybe later with "#" stays separated. –  Scorpion Sep 9 '11 at 8:07

In general a code should change only due to one reason; so if the user requirement tomorrow changed to say allow number from 0 to 200, only this class would change and the code to generate the prefix wouldn't change and vice versa. –  Scorpion Sep 10 '11 at 7:11
