I have the following code that reads in data from a file and stores it in a String variable, now when i run it, it gives me a string out of bounds exception. How can i fix this error?

run command and error:

Have you tried using a debugger and setting a breakpoint at line 92? From there, you can inspect the variables and determine precisely why the index you are passing to charAt is invalid. –  Kirk Woll Sep 13 '11 at 17:51

I'm not sure what is the purpose of this code but it is obviously incorrect. If it should parse Java code .. so you are not able to recognize if (true) ; if (false); on one line as two ifs ;) you will count just for one. –  Rastislav Komara Sep 13 '11 at 17:57

The above code is your problem. Notice that i will 0 - (length - 1) which means that charAt(i) is ok. However, then you do i++ and do another charAt(i). So when i == length -1, charAt after i++ will cause exception.

you could check that i < compareString.length() after you do i++. If not, break. –  John B Sep 13 '11 at 17:58

Compare i to the length of the string after it's incremented it one way. (if (compareString.length() <= i) break;) A better way might be to have your main loop only go to compareString.length() - 3 (since the contents of the loop arn't relevant near the end). –  Rontologist Sep 13 '11 at 17:59

Your for loop fails by default. If you reach ';' at the end of the line e.g.: 'if (true) ;' you then increment i and test if the next char isn't 'i' .. which obviously throws OoB exception as you are asking about index greater than string.length - 1;

You have a bunch of problems in your code. E.g. when you do things like this:

if (compareString.charAt(i) == 'i') 
    {
        i++;

        if (compareString.charAt(i) == 'f') 
        {

you're shooting yourself in the foot. When i points to the last character here, you'll get an error in the 2nd if. I strongly discourage this kind of nested "if" checks for what you're trying to do. It can be an infinite source of bugs in your code. Take a look at the "switch" statement:

switch(compareString.charAt(i)) {
    case 'i':
       // do something
       break;
    case 'f':
       // do something else
       break;
}
