I'm trying to write a method that solves a postfix equation. For ex.

1 2 + 3 *

This would = 9

As of now I'm getting a ArrayoutofboundsException. I think the problem is around my if(statement) in my postFixEvaluation Method.

The first part of code is the method I was talking about where I need the help. After that is the rest of my code. Not sure if yall need to read that or not.

                    break;

                    result = number1 / number2;
                    break;
                case '%':
                    result = number1 % number2;
                    break;
            }
        }
    }

    return result;
}

You need to push the result of the operation back on to the stack. Then at the end (when at the end of the expression string), pop the stack and return the value.

        s.push(c); }
    else {
        number1 = s.pop();
        number2 = s.pop();
        switch(c) {
            case '+':
                result = number1 + number2;

            case '-':
                result = number1 - number2;
                break;
            case '*':
                result = number1 * number2;
                break;
            case '/':
                result = number1 / number2;
                break;
            case '%':
                result = number1 % number2;
                break;
            }
        s.push(result);  // <=== push here
        }
    }
}

return s.pop(); // <==== pop here

See thats a problem I'm having to cause when I go to push the result it gives me an error saying "Unreachable code", If i move any brackets it gives me more errors. –  TMan Sep 15 '11 at 18:48
    
You've just got some incorrect syntax being introduced as you're editing. The concept remains that you need to push after each operation, then pop and return at the end. –  Jonathan M Sep 15 '11 at 18:52
    
One more thing. I'm getting a couple of random numbers printed out instead of just one right answer. In the if(statement) after the for loop. I'm trying to say "if(c is a number)" and I have a bad feeling this is wrong the way i have it. –  TMan Sep 15 '11 at 19:19
