I'm making a Greasemonkey script to add download links beside videos on cnn.com.

I used a saved version of the HTML page to test my script and was able to get it to work perfectly. Then when I put the javascript into Greasemonkey and tried it on the actual site, it didn't work.

This is the not the full script, but the part of the script with the problem. It is simply supposed to add a link at the bottom of every div with the "sec_video_box" class (as seen in the picture).

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

One thing to look at is you should probably use addEventListener or attachEvent to watch for the document being loaded because assigning to window.onload in someone else's page can either trounce their onload handler or they can trounce yours. –  jfriend00 Sep 24 '11 at 12:58

The 3 biggest problems with that script are:

  1. You can't use window.onload that way; see GM Pitfall #2: Event Handlers.   Always use addEventListener() or jQuery.
  2. Those video objects are AJAXed-in after the document loads, anyway.
  3. Those video objects can change, via AJAX; so you'll want to monitor for new objects.

There are some minor issues but first note that the entire existing script can be simplified to this, with jQuery:

Thank you for the help! I tried the script in Chrome (my main browser) and it didn't work. In Firefox it worked but it added a new "link" to each div every 500 milliseconds. In Chrome, I tried modifying the "manifest.json" file in the Chrome Extensions directory to include "jquery.js" because I thought that was the problem, but it still didn't work. –  supercoolville Sep 25 '11 at 3:37
    
Never mind, I got it working in Chrome by pasting the entire jquery.js file into the greasemonkey script. Thanks so much for your help!!! –  supercoolville Sep 25 '11 at 3:56
    
Weird. I tested the script in Firefox and it worked perfectly; it uses the .data() feature to only write a link once per video. ... Also, please specify, in your questions, that you are using Chrome. There are key differences between Greasemonkey scripts and Chrome userscripts. ... Anyway, you got it working; glad to help! –  Brock Adams Sep 25 '11 at 4:17
window.onload = insertlinks;

Remove the (), they cause the function to run immediately and the return value (null in this case) is assigned to onload. Locally, this is fine since loading is near-instant. Online, however, it will fail.

Try adding alert(boxes) before the for loop, make sure it is what you expect it to be. –  Niet the Dark Absol Sep 24 '11 at 21:11
