I want to do the following calculation, repeat along axis0 and axis1 for M and N times.

import numpy as np
a = np.arange(12).reshape(3,4)
b = a.repeat(2,0).repeat(2,1)
print b

[[ 0  0  1  1  2  2  3  3]
 [ 0  0  1  1  2  2  3  3]
 [ 4  4  5  5  6  6  7  7]
 [ 4  4  5  5  6  6  7  7]
 [ 8  8  9  9 10 10 11 11]
 [ 8  8  9  9 10 10 11 11]]

It works, but I want to know are there better methods without create a temporary array.

You could use the kronecker product, see numpy.kron. Your original method is OK too, though!

Example:

>>> import numpy as np
>>> M,N = 2,2
>>> print np.kron(np.arange(12).reshape(3,4), np.ones((M,N), dtype=int))
[[ 0  0  1  1  2  2  3  3]
 [ 0  0  1  1  2  2  3  3]
 [ 4  4  5  5  6  6  7  7]
 [ 4  4  5  5  6  6  7  7]
 [ 8  8  9  9 10 10 11 11]
 [ 8  8  9  9 10 10 11 11]]
