Yesterday I asked a question about plotting hourly data with ggplot2 (R ggplot2 ploting hourly data) and found a solution thanks to the answers received. Then I succedeed ploting temperature data with geom_line().

I tried to apply the same to geom_bar to illustrate precipitation data with bars. But I can't manage to set the y axis limits. I've tried different things but can't find the exact point.

My data looks like:

When setting limits for y axis like that it does not work as I expected. If I remove y axis setting I don't always get the same "automatic" limits

This is what I get when I don't set a limit to y axis. I would like to set limits so bars are greater (vertically). enter image description here

Now the point is to subset PRECIP data to find ylim. Now I'm getting the max of the whole precip data series, not the maximum of the ploted day. I have to decide what it's better, to set the same y limits for all days in the series or change axes for any day.

I've tried your code. It's not reproducible because it can't find the object xlim in your x-axis code. The error might be there, rather than in your y-axis limits. As far as I can tell, the y-axis limits should work (it works on my machine). – Andrie Oct 5 '11 at 13:50
I also tried your code (dropping the scale_x_datetime since there is no xlim defined and dropping the scale_y_continuous since that is the problem) and got a reasonably scaled (0 to 20) y axis. Just speculating, but I'm guessing this is just a subset of the data; maybe you have an extreme PRECIP value that is affecting the scale but not getting plotted? what is max(datos$PRECIP)? – Brian Diggs Oct 5 '11 at 16:52
@Andrie I'm sorry I missed the definition of xlim, I define it as xlim=as.POSIXct("2009-10-01 00:00:00","2009-11-31 23:00:00") , as I can remember cause I have not the code here at home. In any case, syntax was right as it has worked for geom_line(). – pacomet Oct 5 '11 at 17:17

@Andrie is correct. It appears that you are missing xlim.

Using your code above but removing scale_x_datetime:

ggplot(data=datos,aes(x = dia, y = PRECIP)) + 
    geom_bar(colour = "blue",stat = "identity") +
    ylab("Precipitación (l)") + 
    xlab("Hora solar") +
    opts(title = "Precipitacion acumulada horaria \n 2008-05-27 Burriana") +
    scale_y_continuous(limits = c(0,50))

Thanks ChrisC, as I commented to Andrie I had missed to write down here xlim but It had worked for me with geom_line(). Maybe there is a problem with NA values... but they are supposed to be removed from PRECIP. I have tried with different subsets of the original data series, a day, a month, a year and can't find the exact way for y limits. I'll check your answer tomorrow at work. – pacomet Oct 5 '11 at 17:24
