I have a model that associates directly to itself under some specific contexts, kind of like this:

class Node < ActiveRecord::Base
  belongs_to :next_node, :class_name => 'Node'

This has been working excellently, thus far. However, we've recently added a constraint to fix a bug when you delete a node - any nodes pointing to it as the 'next node' need to be updated to reflect that it no longer has a next. I added an after_destroy condition:

class Node < ActiveRecord::Base
  after_destroy :clean_tree

  def clean_tree
    Node.where(:next_node_id => self.id).update_all(:node_type => 'leaf')

Ignoring better implementations of this (this is a very simplified example taking out complexities that make this data model necessary), this works as expected. For newly created structures. But I'm trying to write a migration to update older structures. This is where my question comes in. I tried the following code. But I haven't been able to get a join on the same table to work:

Node.joins(:next_node).where(:next_node => { :id => nil }).update_all(:node_type => 'leaf')

Fails. It sees the join as valid, but the SQL doesn't add the join in, and the where clause doesn't recognize next_node. It generates something like

UPDATE nodes SET node_type = 'leaf' WHERE (next_node.id IS NULL)

Clearly, it's not pulling in the association.

I've tried several variations, using next_node, next_nodes, node, nodes. Nothing seems to work. The above example is the only one that actually makes it far enough to generate sql. Everything else errors out before rails can get that far. What am I doing wrong?

Have you tried adding , :dependent => :destroy on the belongs_to Not sure if that would help (so not posting it as an answer yet) but it spring to mind. Something is telling me that goes with has_many but not sure right now. –  Michael Durrant Oct 18 '11 at 1:34
Thankyou for the suggestion, Michael. - but if I'm not mistaken, dependent => destroy would destroy the referencing node, as well. I don't want that - I just want to break the reference, when a node is deleted. Effectively "zeroing out" the id. Also, the issue isn't with the behavior within the app. The issue I have is with a migration to bring existing data up to speed with the new logic. –  Chris Hayes Oct 19 '11 at 21:54
