I'm getting really strange and frequent crashes in my app that I think was working fine before I updated to iOS 5 (but I'm not 100% sure about this). Basically, the crashes frequently occur when I leave the app (press home button) and come back. It does not always crash, but frequently.

Anyone get similar crashes?

My TestFlight report reports "SIGSEGV, Unknown Signal".

When I look in my phone logs, it says:

You will need to symbolicate your crash log before it makes much sense. In order for this to succeed you will need the exact same binary and dSYM file generated by the build process in Xcode. One way of ensuring this is to use the archive feature on the builds you are going to distribute to your beta testers through for instance TestFlight.

If you have done this then it should just be a matter of opening the crash log in Xcode and it will automatically locate the correct binary and dSYM file for you and convert the offset addresses in your code into method names. Hopefully that will bring you closer to the area in your code where it crashes.

It is fully symoblicated. I do use TestFlight already, and religiously upload the zipped .dSYM file with each new build. –  Joris Weimar Oct 25 '11 at 18:53
    
Hmmm... could be some unretained objects that are automatically cleaned out by iOS while your app is in the background. Are you able to provoke the same behavior when running from Xcode? In which case you might have some luck in catching the culprit by running with zombies enabled. –  Claus Broch Oct 25 '11 at 20:29
    
I gave you the right answer because you were right :-). Although I found out myself by first commenting out half my app, and then half of that, etc. It was an unretained button that was being cleaned up. It's worrying that XCode does not detect these mistakes. –  Joris Weimar Oct 26 '11 at 11:29
    
Good you tracked down this one - they can be really hard to locate. Did you try running clang via Build and Analyze? Sometimes it's able to detect these errors caused by unretained objects unless the cause is somewhat remote from the symptom. –  Claus Broch Oct 26 '11 at 12:52
    
I did run Analyze, but I guess it somehow didn't recognize the fact I was releasing an unretained object. I actually do have zombies enabled, but when running in Xcode it wouldn't even give a crash. What could be the reason for that? Both in the connected (to Xcode) and unconnected case I am releasing an unretained object. Why would it crash in one situation, but not in the other? –  Joris Weimar Oct 26 '11 at 15:16
