I have a programming practical to complete in Haskell but I have run into an error that I have been stuck on for 3 days now. I have tried to search for the error but nothing comes close to explaining what the problem is.

The aim of my program is to create Fibonacci sequence. I do realize that there are smaller programs all over the internet that do the same thing but I am trying to do it in a way in which I fully understand. Plus, at university level, plagiarism will get me expelled.

Here is my program.

getNumber = do
    putStrLn "Please enter a positive number : "
    num <- getLine
    return num

makeRest fibNum fibList = do
    let lst = last fibList
    let blst = fibList !! ((length fibList) - 2)
    let newLst = lst + blst
    if newLst >= fibNum
        then do return fibList
        else do makeRest fibNum (fibList ++ [newLst]) --Haskell is complaining here

generate fibNum = do
    putStrLn "Starting fibinacci sequence generation..."
    let tmp = []
    if fibNum == 0
        then do return [0]
        else do if fibNum == 1
            then do return [0, 1]
            else do return (makeRest fibNum tmp)

main = do
    fibNum <- getNumber
    print $ "fibNum : " ++ fibNum

    fibList <- generate fibNum
    -- print $ "fibList : " ++ fibList

    putStrLn "Thank you for your time."

The error is as follows:

No instances for (Num [String], Num String)
  arising from a use of `generate'
Possible fix:
  add instance declarations for (Num [String], Num String)
In a stmt of a 'do' expression: fibList <- generate fibNum
In the expression:
  do { fibNum <- getNumber;
         print $ "fibNum : " ++ fibNum;
       fibList <- generate fibNum;
       putStrLn "Thank you for your time." }
In an equation for `main':
      = do { fibNum <- getNumber;
               print $ "fibNum : " ++ fibNum;
             fibList <- generate fibNum;
             .... }

Is there anyone who can maybe explain what Haskell's problem with my code is? A possible solution would be nice but I'm not asking for anyone to do my prac for me. Just a little help would be nice, please.

I have been using HaskellPlatform, 2011.2.0.1, if that is of any help.

I don't think this will work. Imagine what blst will be when fibList is [] –  manuzhang Oct 28 '11 at 8:13
the return value of getLine is IO String and num is what pulling out of getLine, String. So all the following operations are on String not Int. –  manuzhang Oct 28 '11 at 10:53
Ah! Makes sense. I do see the problem when the list is empty and I'll see what I can do about converting to an integer. Thanks for the help. If I manage to run into problems, I know where to look. :) –  Metal Paw Oct 28 '11 at 11:00

well, actually I'm new to haskell myself and know little about the do stuff. All I've learned is trying to write function-like codes, using curry and recursion. I did try to work on your code but failed. –  manuzhang Oct 28 '11 at 16:22

I guess your problem's fixed already, but I have a few suggestions to make this code a lot better. First, please include type definitions and don't overuse do notation. For instance

getNumber = do
    putStrLn "Please enter a positive number : "
    num <- getLine
    return num

should be made

getNumber :: IO String
getNumber = putStrLn "Please enter a positive number : " >> getLine

which imo is much easier to read. Remember, do notation is really just shorthand for dealing with monads, and sometimes it's better not to use it.

Also, note that the let expression can take multiple equations:

let lst = last fibList
let blst = fibList !! ((length fibList) - 2)
let newLst = lst + blst

should be made

let lst = last fibList
    blst = fibList !! (length fibList - 2)
    newLst = lst + blst

furthermore, as you only use "newLst" in the code...

let newLst = sum $ drop (length fibList - 2) fibList
