When implemented with a (much) larger dataset and duration, the above logic in the "full" loop takes 60~120 seconds to execute. Is there a more efficient method of achieving the same results?

Edit:
To give more perspective as to the size of the dataset this is used in, this performance optimization is for a signal processing program.

in this implementation you are correct. however, when calculating the number of datasets in from a given frequency and sample rate a whole number does not always result. I will remove it from the question. –  Andrew Oct 30 '11 at 16:13

Seems like the only optimization you can make is calculating scalar(@dataset) once outside the loop:

my $data_set_size = scalar(@dataset);

and inside the loop:

my $i = floor($start_index + $index + ($data_set_size * $_));

I would think there would be some kind of obfuscated way to mash together x and map but I haven't been able to my head around it. like a reverse slice maybe? –  Andrew Oct 30 '11 at 16:04
    
also, the implementation of this in my program is a little different; scalar(@dataset) is optimized in a similar way. with the dataset posed in this question it doesn't really make a huge difference because I'm seeking a solution which might refactor my approach completely. –  Andrew Oct 30 '11 at 16:08
