I am a new to postgresql, I can write some simple pg functions. Now I am in trouble. I want to get four columns using case when, what should I do?

My sql:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION get_grade(IN integer, out integer,out integer,out      integer,out integer)  AS

    select 
    sum(case when t.pirority = 66 then 1 else 0 end) as I ,
    sum(case when t.pirority = 67 then 1 else 0 end) as II,

    sum(case when t.pirority = 225 then 1 else 0 end) as IIII 
    from dt_info t 
    where t.registrant = $1
end

when I use

select * from get_grade(22);

it doesn't work as expected.

then i execute it :

error occur:

ERROR:  function return row and query-specified return row do not match

I feel compelled to add another answer. I am not satisfied with the ones so far.
Try this:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION get_grade(integer)
RETURNS TABLE (
 i    int4
,ii   int4
,iii  int4
,iiii int4) AS
$BODY$
SELECT sum(case when t.priority = 66  then 1 else 0 end)::int4  -- as I
      ,sum(case when t.priority = 67  then 1 else 0 end)::int4  -- as II
      ,sum(case when t.priority = 68  then 1 else 0 end)::int4  -- as III
      ,sum(case when t.priority = 225 then 1 else 0 end)::int4  -- as IIII 
FROM   dt_info t 
WHERE  t.registrant = $1;
$BODY$
LANGUAGE sql;

Major points:

  • You can write a simple query like this with LANGUAGE plpgsql. You can also just use LANGUAGE sql. Either way has certain advantages. I used sql here. Quotes around the words sql or plpgsql are not required.

  • Unquoted upper case identifiers are bad style in PostgreSQL. They are folded to lower case anyway and only serve to confuse.

  • Column aliases inside the function body are not visible outside. They can only serve as documentation in this case. You have to explicitely name your OUT parameters to get column names for your result set. Otherwise you have to specify a column list for every call. I wouldn't do that.

  • Names of OUT parameters share the namespace with other names in the function body. Table-qualify column names that would otherwise conflict with OUT parameters. Don't use aliases that would conflict. I substituted comments for your aliases here.

  • The types of the returned columns have to match the declaration in the header exactly. sum() returns bigint. You have to cast to integer explicitely or get an an error message.

  • I used the column name priority instead of pirority. As @Mu pointed out, this is probably a typo (?).

I am not sure If I undstand what you said very well. The follwing is just a test.

I think you want to use RETURN QUERY and a setof record return type:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION get_grade(IN integer, out bigint, out bigint, out bigint, out bigint)
returns setof record AS
$BODY$
begin
    return query select 
        sum(case when t.pirority = 66 then 1 else 0 end) as I,
        sum(case when t.pirority = 67 then 1 else 0 end) as II,
        sum(case when t.pirority = 68 then 1 else 0 end) as III,
        sum(case when t.pirority = 225 then 1 else 0 end) as IIII 
        from dt_info t 
        where t.registrant = $1;
end
$BODY$
LANGUAGE plpgsql VOLATILE;

You could do that as a plain SQL function as well:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION get_grade(IN integer, out bigint, out bigint, out bigint, out bigint)
returns setof record AS
$BODY$
    select 
        sum(case when t.pirority = 66 then 1 else 0 end) as I,
        sum(case when t.pirority = 67 then 1 else 0 end) as II,
        sum(case when t.pirority = 68 then 1 else 0 end) as III,
        sum(case when t.pirority = 225 then 1 else 0 end) as IIII 
    from dt_info t 
    where t.registrant = $1;
$BODY$
LANGUAGE sql VOLATILE;

BTW, is t.pirority supposed to be t.priority or is that the real column name?
