So I have tried to do this separate classes and continually get this error.

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError
        at geometricobject.GeometricObject.main(GeometricObject.java:44)

What is this Comparable interface, did you create it on your own? If so, you shouldn't, there is already Comparable interface in stdlib –  pajton Nov 7 '11 at 17:06

Change the line

public abstract class GeometricObject implements Comparable {

to

public abstract class GeometricObject implements Comparable<GeometricObject> {

Without generics, the method you need to implement is compareTo(Object), not compareTo(GeometricObject)

It is specified by the assignment I am doing in class that I need to implement Comparable, and declare a compareTo. Is the Comparable interface declaration unnecessary? –  MISMajorDeveloperAnyways Nov 7 '11 at 18:40

Right, you need to implement Comparable (which you do in GeometricObject), but you don't need your own definition of Comparable. –  Reverend Gonzo Nov 7 '11 at 18:42

It's always good to use the @Override annotation whenever you are implementing or overriding some method.

public abstract class GeometricObject implements java.lang.Comparable<GeometricObject> {

    @Override
    public int compareTo(GeometricObject o) {
        int result = 0;
        //do comparision
        return result;
    }
}
