Just curious - is there a package or dataset somewhere containing values for physical constants? I only ask because I've now typed in 273.15 (Celsius to Kelvin conversion) wrong several times. =)

The packages marelac and dielectric both have some physical constants, but not that one in particular. marelac::convert_T will do the temperature conversions.

It's a fairly large task to assemble this information but some of the thermodynamic constants are available in marelac:

I took on the task of reading the NIST Constants Table, editing it so the conversion to numeric would be reasonable, and this was the input code:

Could we perhaps wrap this in a package on CRAN? There's a 'constants' package on r-forge that meant to do something similar, but I never got around making it really useful. I think these data, perhaps also wrapped into a superclass of data.frame to display nicely units and names (with print method, etc), could form a useful reference for many. We could also include some conversion functions, a categorization, aliases for common constants like c, R, etc., and a good search function. –  baptiste Nov 11 '11 at 22:46

May I recommend 2 options:

1) If you need these constants all the time you could make use of the .First library in the form of C2K<-273.5. You can assign constants and store them there. For more on this see http://cran.r-project.org/doc/contrib/Lemon-kickstart/kr_first.html

2) If you want to use the files only sometimes save the constants in a text file in the same format as above x<-273.5 and then source the path to this file using the source function in the following format: source(C:\Users\PAth to save file text\formulas.txt)

This gives you more control over the constants than relying on a package that may or may not contain what you want.

This sounds like a very interesting approach. Can you elaborate on how I would get source to call the particular conversion if I have more than one conversion stored there? Also, that is a pretty easy way of setting vim as the editor! How can I pass the commands back to R though (I tried CTRL+R but that did not work)? –  thequerist Nov 14 '11 at 0:17

Should be fairly easy to download and parse this:

  • looks like fixed format, but those numeric triples might be a bit fiddly. It doesn't have your 273.15 though, because maybe its not a "physical constant" by some definition. But if you ever need the shielded helion to shielded proton mag. mom. ratio, its there.

[actually scratch that, that file is not nicely formatted, and a couple of the constants break even the approximate fixed-width formatting. Needs cleverer processing to be useful]
