this is a hw problem, ive done all the coding but im having trouble linking the asm with c++, im using windows visual studio 2010, i put the main in source files, and my asm files in the resources files, when i try to compiling it just gives me a linking error

The problem is your asm is not being treated as a source file.

To fix:

1) Right-click your project and choose Build Customizations, then check the box next to masm

2) Right-click your .asm files, choose Properties, then change the Item Type to Microsoft Macro Assembler.

Edit #2: I see now that you're using a modified version of the asm code generated by VS and it's almost okay.

Just remove "global" from the PROC declarations, and then add an END to the end of the asm files.

That should get the asm to assemble and link correctly. But it looks like you probably messed something up in clearPointerOp because it goes into an infinite loop at the end. You should be able to figure it out from there once your code is compiling and linking.

did u try fixing and running it? heres what i did step by step, tell me if im missing anything... 1. write clearArray.cpp 2. generate the asm codes for the clearIndex and clearPointer 3. copied the clearIndex and clearPointer code and create asm files for each function, renamed them clearIndexOp and clearPointerOp respetively 4. move the asm files i created to the sources folder of the project 5. use build customization and check masm(.targets, .props) 6. call them asm functions using extern "C" functionName() 7. run it... –  Joe Chen Nov 18 '11 at 0:26

Yes, as I mentioned there is something wrong with your modified clearPointerOp proc. It goes into an infinite loop, so it never exits, and thus your C++ code never reaches the part where it writes anything to a file. I dumped the clearPointer function to asm from Visual Studio and used the code generated verbatim and it works fine. –  Gerald Nov 18 '11 at 1:08

I think I'm seeing a number of errors and inefficiencies in the asm code, but first, why not use the memset() standard C function?

I completely agree with Mike - if you are not C++ or even C then dont even think of using ASM code. Unless you have a specific performance requirement to use assembler - basically just dont! :-) - memset if part of the standard C/C++ library and is a utility function - you can read about it here for example cplusplus.com/reference/clibrary/cstring/memset –  Adrian Cornish Nov 17 '11 at 5:32

Oh to put it in a funny way - java wont let you bend to bite your own ass, perl - well if you know how you could but it would be a mild bite, c++ will let you get a good bite - possible lethal, C will make it so easy to take a life threatening chunk our of your arse. But assembler - you spend most of your time trying to stop your self taking a lethal chunk of you arse every time you breathe. Hope that helps ;-) –  Adrian Cornish Nov 17 '11 at 5:37
    
lols.. thing is i didnt write the asm code, it was generated from vs 2010 and i just remove a few/add a few lines to "optimize" it since it has some useless repeating/generic lines... –  Joe Chen Nov 17 '11 at 5:44

If you read his question he mentions that it's a homework assignment to optimize the asm code generated by a compiler. It's probably not his choice of which language to use ;) –  Gerald Nov 17 '11 at 6:09

Been a long time since I had too - but you seem to have imported function names using C calling convention which is good (remove C++ name mangling).

Some questions:

  1. Did you compile the asm file and are linking them as object files
  2. Did you check the calling conventions used by the c++ compiler you are using and match them in you asm function
