I'm trying to 'overlay' one transparent image over another in Canvas (i.e. both images are originally drawn with globalAlpha<1). However, I do not want both images to blend, but to have the 'source' image over-write the 'destination'.

Using globalCompositeOperation='copy' achieves this, except that fully transparent pixels in the source do not show the destination, but just show the background colour of the page/div.

Here is a link of what I mean. I am trying to make a mirror effect of a row of albums/books, but the bottom corners appear as the background. (they are actually transparent, I have checked)

I have tried all the different operators, with no success.

Any ideas? And is it possible to create a custom operator?

edit: the linked demo only seems to work in Chrome (since using globalCompositeOperation) BTW.

The only workarounds I could find are to a) clip the image, b) compare and draw pixel-by-pixel or c) alter the images to not get this problem in the first place. Guess which option I chose (for now)? ;) PS: this means the link above will not show the problem. –  buddha Nov 19 '11 at 1:23
    
I've been puzzling out the behavior of various composite operations when the src and dest images have pixel alphas between 0 and 1. What I've seen are some inexplicable behaviors. For example, a source-in of two partially transparent pixels results in a pixel with the same color as the source but an alpha lower than either the source or dest. My suspicion is that these behaviors owe to the spec only prescribing behavior for pixels with alpha values of 0 and 1, not values in between. It seems like an area which whatwg and the browser makers haven't gotten around to yet. –  Jegschemesch Apr 11 '12 at 17:54
