Ive been trying to debug this for hours but I was unable to get why it's happening. I have an assumption that the map returned is null? not sure really. Here is the code:

as per the xhtml page where the data is submitted, i've tested that an all fields make it to the next page through getters and setters. So no worried there... The error shown here goes like:

This means that startDate is null. Hint: the number in the stack trace is the line number in the source file. – JB Nizet Nov 20 '11 at 12:59

The exception occurs in the getDatesTreeMap method. Here you are calling methods on three objects: map, startDate and endDate. Since map is clearly initialized before being used, check if startDate and/or endDate are not null inside that method.

Edit: from your comment detailing line 103, I can deduce that indeed startDate is null. Check how the constructor of the class is called. You may be passing a null in place of startDate.

thanks for initial reply, but any suggestion on how to test if they null? Because as I said, then I posted the form, the same variables here were printed out and values came up. – sys_debug Nov 20 '11 at 12:55

I am indeed not using that constructor as u may see when I use createInstance method in FormBean. I just created it. I use the Reservation() empty constructor – sys_debug Nov 20 '11 at 12:57

got it! in the createInstance method, I was missing assigning the startDate from bean to startDate of rsv instance. this is it: rsv.startDate = startDate; rsv.endDate = endDate; – sys_debug Nov 20 '11 at 13:00

The exception is occurring within getDatesTreeMap before it has had a chance to return.

If my reading is correct, the problem has to be in one of these lines:

DateTime startx = new DateTime(startDate.getTime());
DateTime endx = new DateTime(endDate.getTime());
...
List<DateTime> between = getDateRange(startx, endx);
for (DateTime d : between) {
  • If startDate is null you will get an NPE in the first line.

  • If endDate is null you will get an NPE in the second line.

  • If getDateRange(...) returns anull` then you will get an NPE in the following statement.

You can distinguish the three cases by looking at the line that the exception is thrown ... it is in the stack trace. Once you've done that, you need to figure out where the null comes from. For instance, if startDate is null that has to be because:

  • something is calling setStartDate(...) with a null parameter, or
  • nothing is calling setStartDate(...) on that Reservation object, and it is being constructed with a null start date.
