I am struggling whole day to find the answer to this.

Problem:

I have OpenGL view, i create it in IB, initialize all buffers and set its rendering loop in displayLink. It works great, everything is okay. But then i try creating another controller with this openGL view in root controller and present it using:

[self presentModalViewController:newPage animated:YES];

It shows up nicely, just like i wanted. It also works great with no problems found. It is also initiated from IB. But as soon as i use

[self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];

the animation does happen, the view does go down, but as it goes down it leaves "trash" behind it (parts of view in black background) and the previous openGL view stays black. I tried deleting and recreating displayLink but with no luck. I tried destroying/creating framebuffers again and i did manage to get it working once, but it took long time and since i am creating it from the view, i do not know if this is correct approach. Just to make it easier, here is some parts of my code:

The setupView: method basically creates viewport, sets frustum, all necessary variables and states. Nothing special.

Actually if i create any other UIView (not openGL) in the same way, when i dismiss it, my main openGL view remains black. BUT it is still being rendered (at least all my draw methods are being called and all my user input is being received and processed). Also with some help from debugger i found out that my frameBuffer, renderBuffer and depthBuffer variables are 0 (not generated?) so that may be my source of problem. –  avuthless Nov 24 '11 at 1:09
    
Through a lot of testing i found out that when i create another opengl view, the old one just freezes. I think they overlap in some way. Though i would prefer them both to stay private from each other. I have declared all my methods as private (in .m file), also i have declared all variables as @private but that does not help. The only solution i can find is to destroy the view completely and then to initialize it from ground up. This does work for me, but i still seek the correct answer and approach to this problem. –  avuthless Nov 24 '11 at 8:48

I had this same effect happen to me after some optimizations I had done proved to not work in every case, for me the problem present itself after dismissing the Game Center views, or after finishing playing a MPPlayer movie.

From apple's opengl template when you get a LayoutSubviews (which you will get after the top window disapears) you should destroy and recreate your frame buffers

After that the funcion [(EAGLView *)self.view setFramebuffer]; should be called to create the frame buffer again, the orginal template actually has this being called on every frame, but you only need to called it once after it's destroyed. (I put a var called first in there to do that)

I'll just put the routines here:

So this setFramebuffer is called on the function called from displaylink. And I reset the var first to FALSE in my didfinish notifications from Game Center of MPPlayer.

If you can't find your problem try and debug what's being called at the EAGL object level, NSLog every function there and see if anything strange is going on with your buffers or bindings.

well when i try to recreate view that has been in background i see that i am receiving bad renderbuffer parameters (width and height are returned 0). But your solution is correct, i have found more people talking about this issue and they all provided such instructions. i will now scan my code for any flaws/bugs that prevent me from creating new renderbuffers. I have implemented your methods and they really do work great. BUT when i try this with another opengl view, the first one just stops rendering, and no buffer recreation helps it. For testing i have created my opengl scene, and a small subview in corner just to see what happens when that little view initializes. Well my main opengl view simply hang up. Nothing moved or refreshed. The input was okay (at least i think so) but view did not work. It seems two opengl views cannot get along. –  avuthless Nov 24 '11 at 11:04
    
Yes, two opengl views are very much discouraged by apple, but I've seen someone do it, alas with terrible performance. I'll try go thru my browser history and see if I can find it. –  led42 Nov 24 '11 at 11:11

Another possible explanation for the 'EAGLView is black when appearing or reappearing' issue is that your [EAGLView renderbufferStorage:fromDrawable:] method was not called on the main thread. Invoking this method from the background will result in a situation which usually works but ocassionally goes black. Probably not the cause of the exact problem stated here, but arcane enough that it might be useful for desperate googlers stumbling across this page in the future.

I had same issue because of glDepthMask(FALSE) for background frame drawing to save it to image which then was not returned back for normal render. Hope it helps.
