I have the following example from the fmod api docs.

It seems you are missing the FMOD library from your linker line, you need -lfmodex to link in libfmodex.a to your project.

this may be a really dumb question but where do I find a list of all these linker flags? (-lfmodex). I can't find them on the manual or anywhere? –  silent Nov 30 '11 at 3:40

Any GCC manual should give you details about compile / link flags. For example: gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.6.2/gcc/… –  Mathew Block Nov 30 '11 at 22:42
    
The FMOD documentation should tell you what linker flags you need to use. (The gcc manual will tell you about flags in general, but it won't tell you that -lfmodex is the flag to use for this particular library.) –  Keith Thompson Dec 3 '11 at 10:43

The docs shouldn't need to explain how to link a library, this is expected knowledge. The docs already indicate that you must link libfmodex.a. When linking a lib with GCC you use '-l' and specify the name without the prefix or suffix, hence '-lfmodex'. –  Mathew Block Dec 4 '11 at 23:40
