I'm using the MinGW32 and MinGW-64 toolchains to do something somewhat complicated. I'm wrapping a custom native C library (DLL for windows) with SWIG-Java to then load it as a Java Applet jar on a browser using JNLP. This all seems to work fine and dandy for 32 bit browsers. I'm able to compile my native shared library including the SWIG binding using MinGW32 on a linux box and it'll load fine afterwards on IE (32 bit).

It took me quite a while to get MinGW-64 to play nice on the machine but I was finally able to compile the custom library into a 64 bit native windows library. It loads fine on a 64 bit browser but then crashes upon calling a certain function on it. As far as I can deduce the function ties into the 'winmm' library. Is it possible that somehow Windows tries to load a 32 bit DLL, which then causes the crash?

I'm somewhat lost for details as the Java log just disappears and java.exe crashes with not much information (not even in the event log). I've made sure a 64 bit Java runtime is active and the JNLP / Java log seems to be an exact match with the 32 bit version up until it crashes (except for the architecture name).

Is there a way to get more info on the crash somehow, or debug the whole thing?

Edit: Apparently it crashes in a thread somewhere. I wonder if it's threading related. The native library is able to record some audio (part of its functionality) and able to play it back from a file locally. This seems to indicate that a lot of the C code is fine.

can you get a stacktrace by calling the Java code from a free-standing JVM rather than one hidden in all the JNLP stuff? Are you able to test the 64 bit library from outside of Java entirely? Without that information it's almost impossible to offer more than just speculation. – Flexo Dec 8 '11 at 13:54
Yeah, I played with the idea of setting up a environment to poke at either the DLL directly or from a more direct JVM environment, it would take a bit of work. I just wish the Java log wouldn't disappear. I was able to capture a more complete Java log from a machine that had the log window survive. It seems that the swig binding is hiding the stack trace into the C code however. I'll try poking at it from a native environment instead perhaps. – blueyond Dec 8 '11 at 20:54
