We are building a restaurant order management system. We have the following requirements in terms of a database technology:

  1. A requirement is that orders can be placed with tablet devices.

  2. We would also like to migrate to a cloud based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model in the future.

  3. The data sets are expected to be large in size and would change frequently.

Considering this, which database technology would be the ideal choice?

I will be saving data on three levels

  1. Android Tablets
  2. Local Server at a Restaurant
  3. Cloud (where it will save data from all the restaurants and they can access it online too)

#1 and #2 requirements are not database issues. For #3, how large is large? MySQL can handle millions of records -- and it's free. –  StackOverflowNewbie Dec 11 '11 at 12:11

Allowing orders to be placed with tablet devices is in my opinion not a requirement regarding the database but more the front-end application. Any decent SQL or NoSQL database (like MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB or CouchDB) can handle large datasets and frequent changes. If you do not store a lot of binary data (which does not seem to be likely in a restaurant order management system) i suggest taking a proven SQL database like MySQL or PostgreSQL.

The best choice might be to stick with MySQL since it is free, easy to setup and supported by multiple SaaS-Providers like Amazon or Rackspace if you want to outsource it later on.

I work in an Spanish application like that since several years working with MySql. All you need is create a good model of relational database, and doesn´t important the database engine. Could be MySql, postgresql, etc...

Totally agree with Josegil. mySql is a very stable and powerful DB but you need to consider some commercial limitations mySql. You can also consider postgres.

You mentioned that you will be saving data on

You also mentioned the data sets are expected to be large in size and would change frequently.

It seems to be a NoSQL database should be a best fit since you can easily change the 'schema'. One such database that comes to mind is Couchbase. It has Couchbase lite that is for mobile OS.

Additional benefit is that CB is easily scalable and replicated for redundancy if needed. You can download and install to try how easy and fast to get everything up and running.

PS. I am not related to CB in any ways.

I prefer Microsoft SQL Server because I'm much more productive with their development tools than with MySQL, but from a technical point of view, yes any major database system is perfectly capable of this job. Regarding development, this sounds like a great case for Meteor, the full stack JavaScript framework for web application development. It works with MongoDB and includes a 'mini-mongo' version which runs in the browser. This allows the application to respond very quickly, as all data input it instantaneous--it's inserted in the local, mini-mongo database first, then the data is synced with the server in the background. It's very reactive and would keep your wait staff from having to wait around for the server to respond between actions.
