I want to duplicate a class. It is sufficient that I copy all properties of that class. Is it possible to:

  1. loop thru all properties of a class?
  2. assign each property to the other property, like a.prop := b.prop?

The getters and setters should take care of the underlying implementation details.

EDIT: As Francois pointed out I did not word my question carefully enough. I hope the new wording of the question is better

SOLUTION: Linas got the right solution. Find a small demo program below. Derived classes work as expected. I didn't know about the new RTTI possibilities until several people pointed me at it. Very useful information. Thank you all.

There is a recent question which is similar of yours, answers there use "new RTTI" and thus require Delphi version 2010 or later, see stackoverflow.com/q/8679735/723693 –  ain Dec 30 '11 at 18:59
    
Show what you have coded so far. It's an essential input. Your question is still vague : e.g. are those properties published ? is the class descending from TPersistent? what compiler version? –  menjaraz Dec 30 '11 at 19:09

@Francois, the question should be: how can I copy one instance of a class to another one. Using Delphi XE. I haven't coded anything because I couldn't find something about copying Delphi properties. Because all the functionality can ultimately be found in the properties I simply want to copy all the properties of a class, hence the remark of the getters and the setters. There are no assumptions about the parent class.I look into the reference og ain now. –  Arnold Dec 30 '11 at 21:40

Try this code (but I won't advise copying properties of visual components because then you'll need to manually skip some properties):

I had started from the same basic code that had me listed all properties but had not found a solution yet for the copying of the properties. Thanks for your solution which works fine. I wouldn't have thought applying generics which makes it a neat solution indeed. I do not intend to copy visual objects, just some self created objects, but thanks for the warning. –  Arnold Dec 31 '11 at 13:05

Your question as it is does not make much sense to me.

Are you really trying to create a new class by copying an existing one?

Or are you trying to do a deep copy of an instance A of a class into another instance B of the same class?

You didn't mention your Delphi version, but here's a good start. You need to explore the Delphi RTTI which allows you to obtain runtime type information. You'd have to iterate your source class for types, then provide a method for assigning each type.

About RTTI

If you're designing your own simple classes, you could just override assign and do your own property assignments there.
