I tried flushing stdout with sys.stdout.flush() but it's still not working. It works fine until the user only enters C or F which breaks the code. Suffix is the first function called so I make sure that if the user only enters one character then an error is returned. But once the error is returned the user is no longer able to type 'quit' or 'q'.

You don't have to come right out and reveal the you're going to insult the user in the doc string. That part of the code is considered self-documenting. –  Droogans Jan 3 '12 at 0:33

The problem is that temperature is being called recursively in different places when an error happens and to exit from the program the user has to enter q/quit as many times as temperature was called.

To fix the problem, I suggest to remove all recursive calls and handle the errors in a different way. For example, temp might be checked to make sure it's a correct input from user and if that's not the case, print the error message and continue the infinite while loop untill is break is called when the input is either q or quit.

Your program is recursive, even though you aren't doing anything recursive.

For example, in the temperature function, there is this bit:

if(error != None):
    print(error)
    print(example)
    temperature()     

So the temperature function calls the temperature function. Instead you should do a

while temperature():
     pass

In the main function, and have the temperature function return false when somebody quits, and never ever call the temperature() function from anywhere else.
