I am a newbie to android and async task. I am developing a application where in a on click of a button a layout opens and searches for his device latitude and longitude. These latitude and longitude are then sent to a server for getting back the details of branches from nearest to farthest. I am getting an Null pointer Exception cant understand how AsyncTask is working as AsyncTask Execute never gets called. Below is the code

below we can see I am populating cities String array variables of FindUs

Exception always occurs at the function createGroupList for populating cities.

I would strongly recommend you format your code better. Can you point us to the com.stylingandroid.IntelligentLayout.FindUs.createGroupList( (353th line of the FindUs)? –  Boris Strandjev Jan 5 '12 at 7:27
@BorisStrandjev thanks... 353 line is this code 'for( int i = 0 ; i < cities.length ; ++i ) {' not getting cities length, but solved on initialising cities in onPostExecute(). –  Mukunda Jan 5 '12 at 7:58

Hard to say exactly without seeing your code in one contiguous block but it looks like you are creating your adapter (which references cities) before your asynctask has completed. Therefore it is null and that's why you are getting a null pointer even before your asynctask is executed.

Why don't you try initialising and assigning your adapter to the listview in the onPostExecute method of your asynctask...

I have integrated blocks of code for better visibility. Can you give me some example of initialising and assigning adapter to the listview, I tried but could not get it working. Where do I call the Async execute then after getting gps positions. –  Mukunda Jan 4 '12 at 17:26
Well, in your onLocationChanged method you should create and execute your asynctask (reqTask = new RequestTask(); reqTask.execute( "");) <-- presumably you want to add the lat / lon coordinates from your location object to this url. Then in your onPostExecute method of the asynctask you should create the adapter and assign it to the listview (you already have the code above, just move it). –  Damian Jan 4 '12 at 18:28

When is the 2nd code block executed? I'm having some trouble seeing what's going on due to too many code fragments, but if your AsyncTask needs to have finished before you continue, then you should add a callback from the task so that you run the rest of the code when the task has finished. The AsyncTask hands you off to the main thread in onPostExecute(), so you can use the data from there.

AsyncTask executes in another thread. You can't expect it to be complete as soon as you get to the next line of code after you've called execute() on it. Anything that depends on the task being complete needs to happen in the task's onPostExecute() method.

I don't understand what "tried initializing" means. Perhaps you need to read up on what the terms "asynchronous" and "multithreaded" mean. You can't expect the order the code is written in to be the order it executes in since it is running on two separate threads. That means you have to rely on the onPostExecute() method to know when the AsyncTask is complete. In particular you can't call your createGroupList() method until onPostExecute(), otherwise the data it needs won't be available. –  mbaird Jan 4 '12 at 17:38
@mbraid exactly you got my point, I am having an Activity class FindUs it extends ExpandableListView and implements onChildClickListener(), how could I populate an function which is in main class. As you have mentioned I need to call createGroupList() in onPostExecute(). All of my variables and populating functions are in main could I populate the variables with function in onPostExecute() and return the result. –  Mukunda Jan 4 '12 at 18:11
