I found a DBManager class a long time ago and have been using it successfully for well over a year. There is one 'feature' it is lacking and that is retrieving parameters by name rather than index. At present I use:

      dbManager.CreateParameters(8);
      dbManager.AddParameters(0, "@Court", 0);
      dbManager.AddParameters(1, "@BookingDate", DateTime.Today);

      dbManager.AddParameters(3, "@EventID", eventID);
      dbManager.AddParameters(4, "@BookingStartDT", BookingStartDT);
      dbManager.AddParameters(5, "@BookingFinishDT", BookingFinishDT);
      dbManager.AddParameters(6, "@CourseID", courseID);
      dbManager.AddParameters(7, "@ProSessionID", proSessionID);

etc to create the instance and parameters but need to always use the format:

            dbManager.Parameters[1].Value = requestedDate;

in my code.

I would like to be able to use the parameter's name as in

            dbManager.Parameters["@BookingDate"].Value = requestedDate;

as I'm sick of scrolling thru my code to check what the index number is.

I basically understand using an Interface but am certainly a hacker when it comes to writing one.

In my interface IDBManager Class I have:

What code do I need to add to my classes to achieve the desired result? I would appreciate some simple explanation as well as I do want to use this as a good training example in writing interfaces and how they work.

Yes, @SLaks is right: a List<T> would get rid of all that redundant ugliness: .CreateParameters(8); and .AddParameter(<index>, .... You could just do: .AddParameter("@name", value) for each param you need to add. – w0lf Jan 8 '12 at 22:33

You can add this method to the DBManager class:

public IDbDataParameter GetParameter(string parameterName)
{
    var parameter = idbParameters.FirstOrDefault(p => p.ParameterName == parameterName);

    if(parameter==null)
        throw new ApplicationException("No parameter found with the name: "+ parameterName);

    return parameter;
}

and then you can access the parameters like so:

dbManager.GetParameter("@BookingDate").Value = requestedDate;

Update:

You also need to add the method signature to the IDbManager interface, like so:

Thanks for the answer however I cannot get the amended class to work. I have added the complete classes to the original question and I note there already is a 'GetParameter' method although it looks incorrect to me as there is no parameter to specify. Notwithstanding, just adding your code does not allow me to access your method. I presume I need to add something to the IDBManager class as well? Also, I was hoping to be able to use the same code but merely replace the index with the parameter name. – David Jan 9 '12 at 1:06
    
You may need to add a using System.Linq statement at the beginning of the file for this to work. Also, if there's already a method with the same name, rename this (e.g. GetParamByName). If you version of .Net is lower than 3.5, please let me know, so I can provide a LINQ-free implementation. – w0lf Jan 9 '12 at 7:34

First of all, changing the parameter collection to a List was a must but the definitive answer to my question is to make use of the DbParameterCollection.

To keep backward compatibility I added the following to the DBManager class:

private DbParameterCollection dbParameterCollection = null;

I then added a method DBManager.AddParameter:

public void AddParameter(string paramName, object objValue)
{
  IDataParameter newParam = DBManagerFactory.GetParameter(this.ProviderType);
  newParam.ParameterName = paramName;
  newParam.Value = objValue;
  if (idbParametersList == null)
    idbParametersList = new List<IDbDataParameter>();
  idbParametersList.Add((IDbDataParameter)newParam);

  if (dbParameterCollection == null)
    dbParameterCollection = (DbParameterCollection)DBManagerFactory.GetCommand(this.ProviderType).Parameters;
  dbParameterCollection.Add(newParam);

}

Now the part that I've wanted for ages:

public DbParameterCollection Parameter
{
  get
  {
    return dbParameterCollection;
  }
}

I can now use:

      dbManager.AddParameter("@Test", 0);
      dbManager.Parameter["@Test"].Value = 4563;
