So this is a spring MVC application. I need goals for compiling, and building and packaging (an exploded war for production).

Where do I start?

I want to be able to all of this via the command-line, so it can be IDE independent.

Update So running mvn clean install worked!

why are my classes duplicated?

1) in the /classes folder 
2) /myapp-1.0/web-inf/classes folder.

@Blankman see my answer below . The outputDirectory is where maven pushed your compiled classes . You may have specified something similar . –  Aravind A Jan 11 '12 at 5:53

mvn clean install

Perhaps you could make do with mvn package

I'll give you a few more pointers regarding the same

  1. Maven uses a local repository where your jars are downloaded and kept - usually in "C:\Docs n Settings\user.m2" folder

  2. mvn install will package your war and install it into your .m2 folder under the package structure specified by the project's group ID ,artifact ID and version .

  3. mvn package will package your project into a war and put it in your target folder along with the exploded war. You cold specify the output directory using the maven-war-plugin .

  4. maven clean will clean your target folder (Delete it) . So you could use maven clean package to clean the target and recreate it .

  5. Offline mode will help speed up things if your jars are already downloaded . Use can use -o for this .

  6. Your compiles classes go under the folder specified by the build tag in your pom .

So use mvn -o clean package/mvn clean package or mvn package as per your needs . If you need the war in the local repo, use mvn install

Read this link for more info . It says Jar in the link but it depends on the packaging you mention .

Just running mvn will not help. You need to run mvn clean install or mvn clean test.

mvn clean install 

right click on the maven project 1. Run As->Maven Clean 2. Run As->Maven Install

In my case, there was no class files generated. They will be generated in Maven Install step.
