I have the following dart code:

The javascript code generated by the dart compiler for the above code is as follows:

When ran in optimize mode, it generated the following javascript - helloworld.dart.js which is of size 20k

Why is the javascript code which was generated by a dart compiler so huge?

What problem are they trying to solve by generating such huge javascript files?

Side Note: The javascript files were so huge, SO threw the following error:

Newer compilers reduced that size drastically. A 'Hello World' is now 8 lines using the Frog compiler. –  moraes Jan 12 '12 at 11:26

If you would like to get even a better JavaScript, try the Frog compiler instead of DartC. Frog ist written in Dart itself.

The problem of balancing Dart to be optimal in the majority of cases, rather than just this one personal, specific, contrived, useless example program that nobody would ever seriously try to use in a production project.

It doesn't include a Dart runtime. Earlier generated JavaScript included lots of built-in libraries but more recent compilers do the best to include only what is needed. The 17k 'Hello World' from launch is now 8 lines, for example. –  moraes Jan 12 '12 at 11:23

I don't think that this point detracts from Dart as much as it is often made out to: the greater part of most applications is comprised of assets (databases, images, audio files, etc.) which are of fixed size. For real applications, then, the reams of JS produced will not, I don't think, be as significant a part of the whole as they are in a "hello world" application. In the end, it's about choosing one's tools: JS was originally designed with simple page behaviour control in mind (and not large or complex web applications). In this respect, it still has its place (and is as perfect a tool as exists, for example, for getting a computer to say "hello world").
