I have the following problem. An excel sheet contains working days for different activities for a period of a project of a worker. The added sum of all activities in one month is the monthly sum for the worker. I have a macro which should redistribute the days according to a defined treshold value. Let's say the worker can only work 7 days beginning in a certain month then all the individual days in the activities have to be redistributed to match those 7 days.

Example - Start:

Now I want to readjust the days in the activities to get a monthly sum of 7 days or less for the whole period.

Example - Result:

How would an algorithm work for this task? I have the following algorithm so far but I end up having more days in the last column. Also if the days are less than threshold value they should be filled from another column to reach the treshold value.

You need to explain more (in plain English) how the algo would work. The main question is: how would you distribute the days? –  JMax Jan 11 '12 at 10:45
    
this is an optimisation problem - I very much doubt this could be coded other than potentially via Solver. –  brettdj Jan 11 '12 at 10:50

Yes sure. The for loop iterates over all columns. The columns represent the months of the project. It starts from the selected starting month. The next line calculates the sum of days for all activities in the current column and subtract it from the treshold value. The do while loop (should be <> 0 by the way) iterates until there is no deviation to treshold value by adding/deleting one day for each activity from next column. –  user366121 Jan 11 '12 at 11:13
