How can I calculate the speed per sec, and the time left in sec? I've tried to use:

but the rate and the time left goes up and down like (30MB/sec then 5MB/sec) permanently.

How can I fix that? Is there a better way to calculate the speed?

You may do some smoothing of the transfer speed to avoid jumping of the value. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moving_average for one option. Basically compute some sort of average for the speed over time.

i didn't understand what's in your link.. there were alot of math .. but i guess i got your point .. i've thought about that in the first.. u mean when the value goes up like more than 2MB .. i increase it by 0.5 MB .. and if it goes down i do the same .. Something like this. Simple approach may work ok too - instead of measuring latest speed simply divide transferred bytes so far by time spent. If you want value that changes faster - need to average by smaller time period. You need to experiment to get good looking results as you see 1 second produces non-good looking one. –  Alexei Levenkov Jan 27 '12 at 6:15
im thinking of taking sent bytes three times.. each time thread.sleep(1000/3) and after the three times (which is a sec) i print the average of the 3 diff values .. would that help to avoid my problem ? –  Murhaf Sousli Jan 27 '12 at 6:50

You can't fix that. The only way to 'fix' it is by creating a constant speed network/internet.

the network (and your computer) does not have a constant speed.

The calculation tells you what it is.

You can smooth it out by measuring the amount of bytes transferred over a longer period, say the last 20 second and slide that period. that will make it appear smoother. –  Erno de Weerd Jan 27 '12 at 5:47

the sum of sent bytes should be public so our method can get its value every second
