I am trying to re-write a method using TDD.

Here is the original method without the database logic and below it is my attempt to re-write it. Its not complete as I just hit a wall and do not understand how to finish it.

I'm trying to learn and can't work it out so need some help. Thanks for reading.

"what is the best thing to do and do I need to mock stuff etc?"? What does this mean? You have tests. Do they fail? You need to write code. Do they pass? You're done writing code. Where are you stuck? Also, please reduce the code sample to the smallest code sample that illustrates your problem. What specifically is your problem? – S.Lott Jan 27 '12 at 16:29
    
that's a lot of code, divide and conquer - try rebuilding the classes one a time and then stubbing out the methods, testing along the way - or at least building test classes and methods as you build. If you are bothering to refactor this, it must be important - justifying your time building test classes and methods – jamesTheProgrammer Jan 27 '12 at 16:33
    
Your method, even the new one, is trying to do too many things. The purpose, as the method name says, is to get Box Range. However, it also does Error Message handling; and this is not the only other thing. This makes it so much harder to test. – Holystream Jan 27 '12 at 16:35
    
Well one issue I'm stuck with is I'm trying to test each unit/method that I've created via breaking the original up and testing whether it returns anything and if it doesn't bail out of the main method. Am I looking at that correctly? Should I not care and just let it go through all smaller method calls and test what the overall method returns? – Jon Jan 27 '12 at 16:36

At Jon, you may be biting off too much for a noob. implement TDD with a new feature, not an existing one. With this scenario, not only are you introducing testing, TDD, mocking. but now you have also introduced refactoring (yet another new concept).

once you have the the basics of TDD on greenfield code, you can then apply it brownfield code along with refactoring.

one last note: TDD doesn't require mocking, mocking is a separate concept that plays well with TDD, but it's not required. TDD, simply put: is driving out design through tests.

Mocking allows you to create a "fake" object to use in your tests. You will more than likely have to use them, in this case you will create a mock data provider based on your interface. Take a look at a mocking library called moq (just one of many but it's the one I use ) – Magrangs Jan 27 '12 at 17:00

In order to unit test effectively you should adhere to some design principles. Loose coupling, Separation of concerns and Dependency Injection. The reason for this is, without, you will not be able to use mocks in your tests (which is what you will need to do)

I noticed in the first method in you above code you had:

I presume from this that you actually instantiate everything you need here to query the DB. This is not best practice and probably the root of your problems. You should be depending on abstractions and not concretions. A instance of a 'repository' interface (or similar) should be passed using Constructor injection.
