Or two files, basically. I've found one or two ruby algorithms via google that compare strings, but they die on anything past a certain size. Anyone done anything similar to this?

You need to be a little more specific about your goal. Are you looking for a similarity metric for entire strings? Are you looking for very-similar substrings embedded somewhere among other non-similar substrings? What's the order of magnitude on the string sizes? How fast do you need the code to run, how much indexing can you do ahead of time, offline? –  Liudvikas Bukys Jan 27 '12 at 20:08

If you have not yet tried it, you may be interested in computing the Levenstein/edit distance between two strings as is usually done with dynamic programming (see the pseudo-code) and using that distance as a measure of similarity. The dynamic programming method scales much better than the simple recursive method without memoization. However, it too will be too slow when the strings (files) become quite long. Also look for various diff tools and algorithms they use to compare large files. –  Alexey Frunze Jan 27 '12 at 21:07
