If I had a data frame of 20 values:

x <- data.frame(runif(20,10,90))

And I wanted to create another column of the cumulative maximums of no more than the 5 previous values how would I do that? Basically it would be a sliding window of the 5 previous values. Below is the data of how a normal cummax would be done and a sliding cummax, I indicated where the change is apparent.

you could replace those NAs with x[1:4, 2] <- cummax(x[1:4, 1]) –  GSee Jan 29 '12 at 23:48

You could probably do something like this:

rollapplyr(x,5,max,partial = TRUE,by.column = FALSE)

from the zoo package. (I don't use this package regularly, so I'm not sure why I needed to specify by.column = FALSE to ensure that the partial argument worked as I expected. Perhaps someone else can comment on this...)

Its a bug. On encountering max it tries to use rollmax to speed up the calculation but rollmax does not support partial. (rollmax also does not support by.column but it knows that so by adding by.column it did not try to use rollmax.) This would avoid the bug: rollapplyr(x, 5, (max), partial = TRUE) . Also this works if its ok to insert NA's at the beginning and is faster: rollmax(x, 5, fill = NA, align = "right") . –  G. Grothendieck Jan 29 '12 at 14:01
