Sql newbie here. I have been designing a simple database to keep track of work orders submitted by customers and assigning them to corresponding business. I used MySQL workbench to design it so dont have much handle on the actual SQL code.

I m using a single contact information table(contact_info) to keep track of both customers abd business name,address, phone etc. So when i designed the db on workbench everything looked fine but in practice, when a business entity is entered, db requires the customer_id field to be filled also since it is a foreign key coming from customer table. What i want to achieve is to create contact table once and share this table for both business entities and customers. I hope this makes sense. This is a very simple project management application which allow me to keep track of which company(s) are working on which clients. Ex: Assign "Mike's Plumber" business to customer "Mary lou".

Here is the database generated from MySql workbench. Also i would appreciate any resource that would explain this mysql/database concept i would appreciate it. I m not sure how to search for a concept like this one.

It looks like there is lots of unnecessary stuff in there, like unique keys on columns defined already as primary keys or foreign keys defined with no action, do you really need them? –  piotrm Feb 1 '12 at 23:59
    
Sorry for the vagueness. My question is very simple actually. I have 2 tables customers and vendors. I want to use a separate contacts table to store contact information for both customers and vendors so i dont have to repeat myself in the database design. Not sure if it is even possible.
