I need to delete only the first appear of a record. This have a PK (preld_item, IDENTITY).

This is the very slow DELETE..

DELETE pd
FROM   preliquidaciones_deta pd
WHERE  pd.preld_item IN (SELECT MAX(p.preld_item)
                         FROM   preliquidaciones_deta p
                         WHERE  p.id_preliquidacion = '216'
                         GROUP  BY p.id_sds_linea_equipo,
                                   p.id_concepto
                         HAVING COUNT(p.id_sds_linea_equipo) > 1)

EDIT:

  • The table has more than 5 million rows
  • id_preliquidacion has a clustered index (pk)

This works best but continue slow

How about any of the other columns appearing in contidions or as grouping criteria like preld_item, id_sds_linea_equipo, d_concepto, do they have a non clustered index? –  Mithrandir Feb 3 '12 at 13:55
    
yep, they have a nonclustered index, without that the subquery is very slow too –  Marcos Feb 3 '12 at 14:32

You could try this alternative (as you state there won't be more than 2 rows per id_sds_linea_equipo, id_concepto this has the same semantics as your original query)

WITH T
     AS (SELECT *,
                RN = ROW_NUMBER() OVER 
                                 (PARTITION BY id_sds_linea_equipo, id_concepto
                                      ORDER BY preld_item)

         FROM   preliquidaciones_deta
         WHERE  id_preliquidacion = '216')
DELETE FROM T
WHERE RN > 1

Good alternative, but the table have a PK (preld_item, IDENTITY), this fied is the "row identifier" –  Marcos Feb 3 '12 at 14:36

@Marcos - So? Not sure how that affects my answer? This should have the same semantics as your original query but without the self join. You can change the DELETE FROM T to SELECT * FROM T to sanity check and see how performance is. –  Martin Smith Feb 3 '12 at 14:37

@Marcos - Difficult to say without seeing the execution plans and create table script including indexes. Are you working under the assumption that there won't be more than one duplicate per id_sds_linea_equipo, id_concepto? If so it can be simplified. –  Martin Smith Feb 3 '12 at 15:00

Change IN with = since the subquery returns only on row. (to begin with).

It doesn't necessarily only return 1 row. It returns 1 row per id_sds_linea_equipo, id_concepto combination that meets the having clause. –  Martin Smith Feb 3 '12 at 14:02

Not sure if it applies to your case (because of the HAVING clause) but ORDER BY p.preld_item DESC LIMIT 1 could be much faster than the max aggregate.

the problem is not the subquery, this retuns more than 10k rows in seconds... when i run the entire delete is very slow –  Marcos Feb 3 '12 at 14:03
