I want to replace my current UI automation tool (QTP) with .Net framework. I need to test VB6 (COM) application.

One of the fundamentals of framework is using the form name. So far I failed to find a way to get this data using Win API.

There is only one constrain for the solution and its that the solution MUST rely on .Net code - meaning: no commercials tools allowed.

Does anyone is familiar with this subject?

All the references above are for WinForms; VB6 is a whole different technology that predates that. Do you have any access to the source of these apps? I think it's possible to write a ActiveX control that you can add to a form that can explore the other controls on the form and then perhaps extract some information from them that way, but I don't know if there's any way to get information about a VB form from outside the process. – BrendanMcK Feb 15 at 7:22
@BrendanMcK: Thank you for you reply. I currently work on QTP. One of its tools is Gui spy which extract all required objects properties. It does it from another process (I think by SendMessage Win API function). So it's possible, but might be very hard to do. – YoYo Feb 15 at 13:11
What do you mean by the "form name"? Do you mean the class name, i.e. the type? – RobertT Mar 1 at 10:50

I can't tell from your question whether you have control over the VB forms you are looking for. Do you have the source? Can you change and compile them? The reason I'm asking is that RegisterWindowMessage allows you to create a NEW message, one that did not exist before. For this to work, the VB app must also register the same message. It must then listen for that unique message number and respond with the required information, in this case the form name. If this does not sound like the kind of thing you have in your environment, RegisterWindowMessage is probably not the way to go. – RobertT Mar 2 at 7:48
