i am trying to make a colored dropdown list with colored items (please see code below). The color is getting applied after the combobox loses focus.

is this correct behaviour?

how can i get the foreground and/or the background color to change when the combobox has the focus?

none are failing, i want to alter the appearance of the box when it has the focus and i don't know how to do that. –  Ray Tayek Feb 7 '12 at 8:52

please split Editor and Renderer, and add to DefaultListCellRenderer these two methods

  • cellHasFocus

  • isSelected

The foreground text colors in your example seem to work correctly. Certain other colors are managed by the component's UI delegate for a given Look & Feel, as shown below. Note that the delegate may choose to apply a color in a way that preserves contrast in various states, e.g selected, enabled, etc. You can learn more in the article UIManager Defaults.

while true, it's not the relevant piece in this context: the main problem is a design accident in the ComboBox rendering - there's no reliable way to configure the visual properities of the rendering component (on a concrete instance of a combo) which is used to render the selected combobox item (that is outside of the drop-down list) This holds for colors and font - the painting implementaions in the XXComboBoxUI first query the renderer - which does its config - and then post-configure as they deem appropriate –  kleopatra Feb 7 '12 at 12:44
