Currently I'm facing an issue in a SQL Server retrieval procedure.

Stored procedure returns unexpected result when executed by many user (No. of users > 40) concurrently for the same parameter. For No of users <= 20 it shows expected result. Error rate is 0.07-0.10 % measured using jMeter.

The following SQL statement is expected to return one row. But under heavy load it sometimes returns no rows.

This is almost certainly a transaction isolation level issue. I didn't take the time to really dig into the logic of the proc, but just taking a quick look, it seems as though this procedure updates state which gets dirty-read by other connections, causing intermittent data issues.

Something to try (on your TEST database!) is to remove all NOLOCK hints, and execute this procedure inside a transaction. Like I said, I haven't really analyzed the logic, but try this:

SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED;  --Set back to the default on this connection

it's likely that your throughput will go down, but your results will become correct. Analyze the proc carefully to find the proper transaction isolation level. It may be that SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED SNAPSHOT will return the proper answers with a higher throughput, but that's something to analyze and test first.

I am trying to set snapshot isolation on. is it the best way of doing it ? any suggestion ? First of all, IMO David Markle's answer is the correct one. However, FWIW I am posting this answer to provide you with a cleaned-up, corrected(IMHO) example of the code that has all of the "(nolock)" hints removed.

I have not implemented the Isolation and Transaction container statements, but I can if requested. I would generally suggest SNAPSHOT Isolation for this instead, as there are high concurrency issues.

The code below has many, many redundant and obsolete paths removed. the following frequently used (anti)pattern:

The IF ... EXISTS is a race condition anyway. There is no guarantee that because it exists at the time of the check that it will still do so the second time around. Especially at NOLOCK but also at read committed. –  Martin Smith Feb 8 '12 at 12:01

Also, its important to understand here that the "error" is not in any way in SQL Server. It is entirely in the code (and isolation settings). It just manifests more in some situations/configurations than in others. –  RBarryYoung Feb 10 '12 at 20:50

try setting the isolation level to read uncommitted to check if its a blocking issue

depends on the situation I would say. I use it sometimes, sometimes I use Snapshot isolation. But yes, the main goal here is to see if the tables are being blocked by concurrent users –  Diego Feb 7 '12 at 14:23
