is the following method likely to cause a thread to hang which in turn causing other threads to hang that eventually building up a stack and crash the app server?

I've pasted a snapshot of the thread dump generated when running my test case simulating the issue I mentioned earlier in my previous question.

All "Servlet.Engine.Transports" threads are those relevant to my application. It seems they all waiting on the monitor. But no further details were provided as to what resource they are waiting on. I'm a bit new in analysing these thread dumps. Doesn't seemed like a deadlock, not a race condition and not resource contention. However, in the result of my load testing tool, process hanging was obvious. Thanks for your help

Short answer: no. Longer answer: there are a lot of problems with this code. I recommend that you use a pre-built (and well-tested) cache such as EhCache. –  kdgregory Feb 9 '12 at 1:33
    
@user1096804 Without knowing about the details of the WebSphere Threadpool I would say that the "Servlet.Engine.Transports" threads are waiting for incoming work. –  afrischke Feb 9 '12 at 8:41

You should move your "cleanout greater than 50000" test inside the synchronzed block to ensure all threads see the most up-to-date version of its value, that is modified at the end of the method.

The rest looks OK, provided all other access to the "content" and "cleanout" variables are also protected by the "PollCacheManager.class" monitor (reads included).

I had similar thought that "cleanout greater than 50000" could be the cause, but I can never prove it myself, which I guess due to my lack of understanding how Synchronised blocks work. Every data that is shared between threads must be synchronized one way or another (synchronized keyword, or with Locks from java.util.concurrent, or by using thread-safe structures). Here, your "cleanout" property is read (in the test) without any synchronization. This could result in a thread not seing the updated value (set to 0 at the end of the method). Moreover, I see that its value is not incremented in this method, so I guess it is elsewhere. Make sure it is done in a sync block too, using the same monitor as in the above code. –  Olivier Croisier Feb 9 '12 at 0:46

That's impossible to say with just this code... Must be a deadlock somewhere. I's suggest you first learn how to properly synchronize your code before attempting to correct this one. –  Olivier Croisier Feb 9 '12 at 1:01

While the code presented in the question may represents a bottleneck (synchronizing on a static field/class object), it alone cannot be responsible for any liveness issues you may be seeing as long as we can assume that the executing thread will be able to iterate through the keys in the Hashtable in a reasonable amount of time.

Note however that it is somewhat dangerous to synchronize on the class object of PollCacheManager iff the PollCacheManager is publicly accessible as external code might acquire a lock on the PollCacheManager class object and thus indefinitively delay the executing thread (see this page for details).

If you experience application hangs your best bet is to trigger a thread dump (just send the JVM a SIGQUIT (kill -3 on Unix), Ctrl-Break on Windows) and analyse the stack traces.

I would make the whole function synchronized, given you are using this synchronization, I wonder why you are using Hashtable (which is also synchronized)?

Is it possible that you are hitting some race condition because some other access to this hashtable isn't protected by the same lock?
