I am making an image slideshow using native JS.
I decided to make it myself because it needs to run at ~100ms intervals, and without any special transition effects (see it here), so I figured it was unnecessary to include a big library like JQuery just for just a simple application.
This is the code I am currently using [edit: original code - now modified]:

Now for the question: this script only allows me to have one single 'slideshow' on the page - because in each iteration of the loop it overrides the imgNum variable. Is there an other, better way of doing this slideshow (if possible without JQuery, otherwise OK), even in a completely different way? Thank you

EDIT: I have remade the script following Jared Farrish's answer and it's now working fine!

This: setTimeout("animateSlideshow(imgNum, imgTag, d);", 100) should be setTimeout(function(){animateSlideshow(imgNum, imgTag, d)}, 100). Avoiding passing strings as functions to setTimeout() and setInterval(), which uses eval(). –  Jared Farrish Feb 11 '12 at 13:18

@Sean - Just a thought: What if you combine couple images together, and just change position of the image in CSS when you transit between pictures? Would this reduce HTTP traffic and... make the transition go smoother? –  DashK Feb 11 '12 at 13:39
    
@DashK - You mean make one image with more 'frames' side by side, then change the position in order to show only one at a time (a sprue)? That didn't actually occur to me, thank you! –  Sean Feb 11 '12 at 13:45

looking into doing it with javscript objects instead of just blocking out methods. It will allow you to easily scale you're project. example var gallery = function (id) {this.id = id;}; –  Patrick Lorio Feb 11 '12 at 17:19

There were some issues I saw with your code or approach, so I decided to redo it with the approach I would take. For instance:

  1. I would use document.images to get all images and, for ones that have the rotator-specific className, to identify (domElement.parentNode) and obtain the containing div, which will give me it's id.
  2. I would use the parentNode.id of the class="rotation" images to create an object with sets (by container ids) I can use to store references to the img nodes.
  3. Use closure scope to stay out of the global scope, as well as be able to share variables between the closure-scoped functions.
  4. Use variable functions to setup the handler and callback functions.

Let me know if you have any questions or find something that doesn't work.

When I created the array that provides the list of images per rotator set, I "saved" them into an object (imgs) which is declared within the slideshows variable function. Setting it at this level allows each of the variable and anonymous functions within slideshows to access the imgs object. The imgs.sets property is itself an object, with keys set for each container element with a class name of rotation. When I call animateSlideshow(), I use the context of the container element, and since I'm in that context, I can use this (self here) to get the "key", or container id. –  Jared Farrish Feb 12 '12 at 0:25
    
Using that self.id, which correlates to <div id="rotator1" ... for one of the containers for instance, I can use the current image index in imgs.sets[self.id][current] to get the reference to image that is current being displayed, hide that image, increment current one to get the next image in the list for the container (reset to the first image in the imgs.sets[self.id] if past the last image), then call itself with the new current id passed to itself in the setTimeout(). self was a remnant of something else, so you could use this and not the self = this. –  Jared Farrish Feb 12 '12 at 0:32
    
I added some comments to the code, and while doing so realized I had an error in the imageerror part of the animateSlideshow() (I didn't need ++current, just current, so it was skipping an image). See jsfiddle.net/DLz92/1. –  Jared Farrish Feb 12 '12 at 1:10
