I am trying to create TIFF image using Libtiff. I could not figure out the reason why the file is unable to be opened. Anyone have any idea??

At least put the code in an autorelease pool and #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> so you can use iOS methods such as NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains. –  Zaph Feb 15 '12 at 14:51

DOing it that way precludes using other than "c" functions. But if the application is going to be s full iOS app you will want to be able to use there iOS frameworks. –  Zaph Feb 15 '12 at 15:09

You DO need a full path to access files on the wonderfully restricted iOS file system. You can only read and write files into your app's private directories. Each app has a unique area in the filesystem. The app's directory name is a long series of letters and numbers that can be queried with getenv(). Here's the C version:

   strcat(szFileName, "output.tif");

   if((image = TIFFOpen(szFileName, "w")) == NULL)

   }

Update: Since there may be some long term compatibility issues with this method, another option is to use argv[0] (the full path to your executable) and trim off the leaf name and modify it to point to the Documents directory.

It's not quite correct to say that this is not iOS. It is certainly possible to write a pure C app on the iPhone. You'll end up with a unix command line app with no gui capability. I use this technique frequently for writing test apps on iPhone/iPad. –  BitBank Feb 14 '12 at 23:30
    
The preferred method to obtain the path to the the Documents directory (or any other writable directory) in iOS is to use NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains. There are other writable directories in addition to the Documents directory. –  Zaph Feb 15 '12 at 14:59

You need a full path to the file. Files are usually written to the applications Document directory.

Here is how to get the path to the Documents directory for a file named output.tif including getting a "c" string representation:

NSArray *paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES);
NSString *documentsDirectory = [paths objectAtIndex:0];
NSString *filePath = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"output.tif"];
const char* cPath = [filePath cStringUsingEncoding:NSMacOSRomanStringEncoding];

NSLog(@"cPath %s", cPath); NSLog output:

cPath /Volumes/User/dgrassi/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/5.0/Applications/D483A43F-E8DD-4C80-81CF-E2F0CDF3EF49/Documents/output.tif

This is a c code that is used in tiffLib. The TIFFOpen does not take filepath as parameter. –  pa12 Feb 13 '12 at 17:01
