I have quite a simple question really. I wrote a servlet for suppliers to upload XML-files to. These files get written to a location on the server. All the files get renamed with a timestamp.

Is there a risk of concurrency problems with the code below? I ask because we receive files from a supplier, that look like they have content from 2 different XML-files

Does your servlet maintaining any state (class level variables)? If not, I think you are ok. –  Nambari Feb 14 '12 at 16:03
    
Thanks for the reply, yeah, some instance variables in the classes, but they are all final... (directory info, server ip, email address). –  Treurwilg Feb 14 '12 at 16:07
    
Remember, final doesn't mean object state can't be changed, reference can't be changed. As long as your class variables used for read purpose, I think it is ok. –  Nambari Feb 14 '12 at 16:30

There would not be synchronization problems but there can be race conditions, for example, two threads might return the same file name using the method getFileName()

Really? You mean the getTimeInMillis() could return the same value for 2 threads? I'll look around the web to see if there is a better solution. –  Treurwilg Feb 15 '12 at 7:25

yes UUID is a better option, you may also use a database sequence to generate unique identifiers –  Gaurav Feb 17 '12 at 7:14
