I'm trying to fit the model

glmer(trans.dummy ~ pop + year + (year | munname), 
      data=pool, family=binomial(link = "logit"), REML=T, verbose=T)

but I keep receiving the following error:

Error in glm.fit(fr$X, fr$Y, weights = wts, offset = offset, family = family,  : 
NA/NaN/Inf in foreign function call (arg 1)

I omitted NAs, changed the model specification, transformed pop to log(pop) but nothing solved the problem. I think the problem is on variable 'pop' given that is the only one that causes that problem. When I run

mod6 <- glmer(trans.dummy ~ constituency.coa + I(governat.part) + I(district2) + 
                        gdp.cap + year + ifdm + year + (year | munname) + (year | uf), 
              data=pool, family=binomial(link = "logit"), REML=T, verbose=T)

I don't have any problem.

Any idea about what is happening?

This question will be easier to solve if you show us your data. What does pool$pop look like? Does it contain NaN or Inf values? – Richie Cotton Feb 15 '12 at 10:08

You should at least post str() and summary() on your 'pop' and 'year' variables. – 42- Feb 15 '12 at 19:34

It looks like (at least) one of your categories is seriously imbalanced, perhaps having all 'trans.dummies' at the same level in one or more of the implicit cross-classifications created by your model specification. The way to approach this is to display the tabulations. You might start with:

with(pool, table(trans.dummy, year ,munname) )

Is there a easier way to check that when data is huge? I have 43000 observations. 5000 subjects (munname) repeated for 8 years. The table does not help. But thanks for your answer. – user1172558 Feb 15 '12 at 17:34
