In Asp.Net (4.0 Forms not MVC) I am looking for Thread-Safe best practise for passing error messages from a DAL Object that was called by what serves as a business layer object up to the Asp.Net Page.

It seems inelegant (and my gut says inefficent but I could be wrong) to me to simply throw Exceptions all the way up the call chain to be trapped in the Page.

At the same time neither do I really want to have to instantiate every lower level object just so that I can grab a non-static Message field when an instance-method balks for some reason.

At the moment I have this mixed approach:

Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e){
    //instantiate non-static class, with non-static methods
    MyClass myClass = new MyClass(); 
    if(!myClass.DoSomething()){
       ErrorLabel.Text = myClass.ErrorMessage;
    }
}

and:

public Class MyClass{
.......
   public string ErrorMessage{get;set;}
   public bool DoSomething(){
      try{
          MyDalClass.DoSomeDataTricks();
          return true;
      }
      catch (exception ex){
          ErrorMessage = ex.Message;
          return false;
      }
   }
}

and finally:

public Class MyDalClass{  //non-static class
    ......
    public static void DoSomeDataTricks(){   //static method
       ......
       if(fooBar){
          throw new Exception("Database Error: Cannot Find World Peace.");
       }
    }
 }

As far as know the above is Thread-Safe in the Asp.Net environment (if you don't think so please tell me why) but I feel like there has to be a better way, especially at the DAL level.

Exception propagation should not be a problem at all. Since you already create an exception, there is little overhead of propagating it all the way to Page_Load. I would declare DoSomething as void and remove the try-catch, or rethrow the exception so that page load can catch it. Combining return-value based error reporting and exception throwing, for one single call chain is definitely inelegant. –  Irfy Feb 15 '12 at 20:47
    
Also, thread safety has more to do with shared data access, not static/instance concept. So as long as your functions access shared data (like object member variables, in case of long-lived, thread-shared objects, etc.) in a thread-safe way, your call-chain is good to go. –  Irfy Feb 15 '12 at 20:48
