This is my first attempt at creating a service and incorporating it in my application. For some reason, I can't call any of the public methods (for the location).

The Activity

Your issue is that in your onStart method, your service hasn't actually started. The call

Intent intent = new Intent(this, MileageService.class);
bindService(intent, mConnection, Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE);

is asynchronous. You need to wait for the service to become bound before you call any methods on this. There are many ways to do that, but the quickest would be to add the call mService.getCurrentLocation(); to the end of the onServiceConnected method. Note that this is going to run on the main thread of the app so don't do blocking operations on it.

As you get further along, you may find that you need to kick off an async task from the end of teh connection to do all the work you want without affecting the ui. There are examples of that around the web.

So....is there a good, recognized way to tell if the service is connected or not? Or a "wait for service" to connect method? –  Cody Feb 16 '12 at 21:06

the method onServiceConnected is called with the service binder when it is ready to be bound to. that is your indication. are you saying that the line mService = binder.getService(); in your onSeriveConnected class is returning null? If so, update your post with the output of the logcat log. –  Nick Campion Feb 16 '12 at 22:54

Thou shall not call UI methdods dealing with UI from other threads than my UI thread. And your service is certainly not ibn UI thread. If you like to modify UI from service thread, you have to post async tasks to UI thread. For example with this:

Yeah, the toast notification was used in the example on the developer website, so I'm sure that one is fine. Besides, I don't think it would cause my service not to work.. –  Cody Feb 16 '12 at 20:58
    
using toast from service would certainly give you an exception. BTW, it would be better if you post logcat messages. Ususlly just carefully reading them solves most of problems –  Konstantin Pribluda Feb 17 '12 at 6:28
