I am new to this topic but i have done a couple days worth of investigating and testing. I'm running some C# sample code to test out some AesCryptoServiceProvider functionality. The test project I stared with came from : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.security.cryptography.aescryptoserviceprovider.aspx

I modified the sample code so I can specify my own Key and Initialization Vector, use 128-bit Block and Key sizes, and specify CBC mode of operation for the AES object arguments to both CreateEncryptor() and CreateDecryptor().

What I'm seeing is that using an arbitrary IV for decryption only affects the results of the first 16-byte block - all other bytes are decrypted successfully.

Q: Based on the diagram referenced below, it seems that the Initialization Vector should have an effect on each block of encrypted cypher data. So why does any choice of IV result in successful decryption after the 16th byte (as long as the proper key is used)? If this is the expected result, then is the IV only intended to be useful for very small data sets? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_cipher_modes_of_operation#Cipher-block_chaining_.28CBC.29

It's been over a month and no one has commented at at all. I'm not criticizing the community, but to help me with future posts... was the question worded poorly? was it such a beginner question that nobody wanted to bother? Constructive feedback will be appreciated. –  Tony H. Mar 23 '12 at 15:51
I am running into same problem recently, if you are creating AesCryptoServiceProvider freshly in every single run, the string will be fine. (reason unknown), maybe you just cannot cache AesCryptoServiceProvider and use it again –  Eric Yin Aug 7 '12 at 21:05
