I met the following deadlock once and was very confusing about why the deadlock happened.

TRANSACTION(1) is running sql: 
delete from `test_STEP` where `test_C1`=865 

TRANSACTION(2) is running sql: 
delete from `test_STEP` where `test_C1`=866 

Column test_C1 has unique index named test_STEP_IDX. And the PRIMARY index is for another column named E_ID.

From the deadlock info, we could see that TRANSACTION(1) wasn't holding any lock but was waiting for a certain record lock in X mode on PRIMARY index to be granted. TRANSACTION(2) was holding some record locks in X mode on PRIMARY index including the one TRANSACTION(1) was waiting for. And TRANSACTION(2) was still waiting for another record lock in X mode on PRIMARY index. That was so confusing. What exactly TRANSACTION(1) hold and kept TRANSACTION(2) from going on?

Could anybody share some light about this? Thanks in advance.

Are there any FK constraints from test_STEP to other tables? Also, the index named test_STEP_IDX should be renamed, instead of using the table name, use the column name. This has nothing to do with the problem, just a fyi. –  Mike Purcell Feb 21 '12 at 21:27
    
Thanks for your quick response. Yes,there is a FK constraint from table test_STEP to another table on column test_C1, cascade on delete. And there is also an index which has the same name as the FK and is for column test_C1. –  katrina Feb 22 '12 at 2:36

No. Column test_C1 has different values in two transactions and it's corresponding to the primary key of the foreign table. And from the deadlock log, we could see deadlock is happening on table test_STEP but not the foreign one. –  katrina Feb 23 '12 at 3:00
    
Ya, I was curious if both transactions were locked because of their lock on a shared row from a different table. –  Mike Purcell Feb 23 '12 at 3:39
