I am completely lost in C# as I have never used it before. However, I am trying to add a feature in the following code where custom variables can be imported from a text file (and if possible, exported, but that's not as important. Can someone please guide me on how I can accomplish this?

I basically want something like the setDefaultVariables method but one that can detect a text file and import those variables form that file instead and then tell the program to use those variables. –  ProgramFun Feb 25 '12 at 2:57

Sounds like you want to serialize your C# state into a text format. Xml serialization: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.xml.serialization.xmlserializer.aspx

So is this similar to BufferedReader in Java? I am quite confused with that information. Please keep in mind that I am extremely new to C#. –  ProgramFun Feb 25 '12 at 2:40

@ProgramFun No. This is not similar to BufferedReader. The equivalent for that in C# would be StreamReader in combination with BufferedStream. XmlSerializer provides functionality to store/retrieve your data models to/from XML with a declarative syntax - i.e. adding attributes to your properties –  yas4891 Feb 25 '12 at 6:45
    
@yas4891 Thanks for clarifying that. Wouldn't it just be easier for me to use 'StreamReader' and just output all variable values to a text file and then read them in the same order when needed? Or would you recommend an XML more than a text file? Also, can you possibly guide me as to where I should include the code for file output in the program? @ProgramFun Using stream reading/writing could be quicker and the file would be more compact, but it'd also be more brittle. With XML serialization, you could serialize lists of strings or custom structures in a somewhat type-friendly way, and the serializer would do all the hard work of making sure the data gets written and read properly.
