I wrote an algorithm to convert a RGB image to a YUV420. I spend a long time trying to make it faster but I haven't find any other way to boost its efficiency, so now I turn to you so you can tell me if this is as good as I get, or if there's another more efficient way to do it (the algorithm is in C++ but C and assembler are also options)

Unroll your loop, and get rid of the if in the inner loop. But do not run over the image data 3 times, and it is even faster!

In my tests, this was about 25% faster than your accepted answer (VS 2010, depending on whether x86 or x64 is enabled.)

did you test the result? because I don't think this for: for( size_t x = 0; x < width; x += 2 ) is even right. while it works for u and v (destination[upos++] and destination[vpos++]) it does not for the y component, since you only iterate over half of the line. –  Sambatyon Feb 28 '12 at 6:53
    
I didn't compare the results, but destination[i++] is written twice per iteration, so that is not a concern from my point of view. i is the source index and the destination index for the y plane. –  Timbo Feb 28 '12 at 8:13
    
By the way if you care about the quality of your output image, you should think about whether you change your algorithm to average the r/g/b values of each 2x2 pixel block before converting it into u/v, instead of just picking one r/g/b sample out of each 2x2 block. +1! On first sight I could not comprehend how writing to three distant memory locations (Y, U & V planes) could be so much faster (compared to my answer). Do not access pointers more then once, copy the value to the stack and then use the value on the stack. (Aliasing)

...

...

On the other hand, you can do it in SSE without look-up tables and would do 8 pixels at once.

I guess the lookup tables are superfluous. The respective multiplications should be faster than a memory access. Especially in such an inner loop.

Then, I would also apply some small changes (as others already have suggested)..:

You should also rearrange the code, so that you can remove the if(). Small, simple inner loops without branches are fast. Here, it may be a good idea to first write Y plane, then U and V planes, like this:

You can use SSE or 3dNow assembly codes to further boost the performance.

As for c++ code, I think it is hard to improve based on your current code.

The only obvious point I can see is that you're doing 3 * i three times. You could store that result in a local variable but the compiler may well already be doing that. So..

r = rgb + 3 * i;
g = rgb + 3 * i + 1;
b = rgb + 3 * i + 2;

...becomes:

r = rgb + 3 * i;
g = r + 1;
b = g + 1;

..although I doubt it'd have much impact.

As ciphor suggests, I think assembly is the only way you're likely to improve upon what you've got there.

Any reasonable compiler will do that for you. And the good ones will see that each of those pointers is incremented by 3 each step, and will just +3 them (Or find an even better way that I can't think of right now!) –  Timbo Feb 27 '12 at 13:49
