I want to insert data with different charsets (e.g. ISO8859-1 and ISO8859-2) into Oracle. Usually I would accomplish this by setting the NLS_LANG with setenv(). However, my application is multithreaded, and the data which is inserted in one thread may differs from the charset of another thread.

I have tried to use ALTER SESSION, since every thread uses it's own session, yet I can't set the charset with this method.

Is there even a possible way to do this?

Edit: The Database Character Set is UTF8. I'm using C++ and unixODBC.

Use the charset of the DB, you won't be able to insert any other character anyway. –  Vincent Malgrat Feb 28 '12 at 9:25
I tried to convert the data to UTF-8 with iconv and insert it afterwards. I used SQLBindParameter with SQL_C_CHAR as the ValueType and SQL_WCHAR (also tried SQL_CHAR) as the ParameterType. When I then look at what has been written to the DB (with dump function) the following comes up for the special character: efbfbdefbfbd. –  plk Feb 28 '12 at 9:42
@plk: hi, have you made sure that iconv produces meaningful results ? have you tried to use SQL_C_WCHAR (perhaps with SQL_LONGVARCHAR) ? if you may alter the data model you could insert your strings as byte sequences into CLOB or RAW columns of an interim table with an indicator column to note the charset of the respective snippet (probably using SQL_C_BINARY+SQL_LONGVARBINARY; trivially generalized to more/different charsets). there are built-in oracle stored procs (packages utl_i18n, utl_raw) that allow you to convert between charsets and thus feed the actual target tables later. –  collapsar Mar 2 '12 at 11:41
