How I could report for example every five seconds how much file is processed? I guess I need thread but how it's controlled?

How I start and end reportProcess()?

Yes I know calculations are probably wrong there.

When you do fs=fileScanner, you are not creating an instance of fileScanner. You are only assigning the class object to fs. It should be fs=fileScanner(). –  Dan Gerhardsson Feb 29 '12 at 18:35

Just call reportProcess in read loop every 5 secs e.g.

lastTime = time.time()
while True:
    data = f.read(1024)
    if not data:
      break
    self.readBytes += len(data)
    if time.time() - lastTime > 5:
        self.reportProcess()
        lastTime = time.time()

Unreleated: Why are you using class level attributes, usually they should be at instance level e.g.

class FileScanner:
  def __init__(self):
      self.readBytes = 0
      self.lastReadBytes = 0

I use class-level attributes to denote what attributes an instance will own and to expose them to sphinx-doc. –  Niklas R Feb 29 '12 at 18:58

Could you just call the reportProcess() from inside the scanFile() function inside the while loop. For example every x bytes read you call reportProcess() (add condition inside the while loop). Would that solve your problem?
